Suntory Hibiki 17 Blended Japanese Whisky
Japanese whisky continues to grow in popularity, subsequently becoming increasingly difficult to find. A number of the populate Japanese whiskies from Suntory and Nikka are developed in a style similar to that found in Scotch, having the Scottish distilling experience brought to Japan by Masataka Taketsuru, who was largely influential in the setup and processes followed at Suntory’s Yamazaki distillery and later continued with Nikka. To suit the Japanese palate, many Japanese whiskies are found in a sweeter style, even those with peat influence are often sweet and salty rather than the big medicinal notes found in some Scottish whiskies.
Hibiki 17 is one of these popular whiskies, with a blend of malt and grain whiskies, from a variety of casks, including ex-bourbon, sherry, mizunara oak and hints of peat. With such a balanced, complex and easy to drink flavour profile, the now increasing interest from international buyers have caused aged stocks shortages in the Suntory’s distilleries, forcing Suntory to discontinue this whisky in 2018.
