Nikka Taketsuru 17 Pure Malt Blended Japanese Whisky
Japanese whisky continues to grow in popularity and as a result, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find world-wide. A number of the most popular Japanese whiskies from Nikka and Suntory are now being moved away from age statements in order to keep up with demand.
Masataka Taketsuru was largely influential in the setup of Suntory’s Yamazaki distillery and later moved on to Nikka. He brought distilling experience back from Scotland, along with some adaptions to suit the Japanese palate. This resulted in a sweeter style, now commonly associated with whiskies from Japan. Even peated whiskies from Japan are often sweet and salty rather than the big medicinal notes found in some Scottish whiskies.
Taketsuru 17 contains a well-aged blend of malt whiskies from Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries.

The Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries both contribute whiskies to this blended malt. The distilleries are each positioned in places Masataka Taketsuru found to be ideal for producing whisky while making two distinctly different malts. The two are artfully aged and blended throughout Nikka’s line of whiskies, including the Taketsuru Pure Malt releases.
